I get asked regularly how people can protect themselves online and I wanted to create a quick post to help people get started with the basics. There are a lot of really great guides and resources and this is in no way comprehensive, just a couple starting points for people who are overwhelmed and don’t know where to turn.

DOXXING:

When faced with online harassment or abuse people are most concerned about their physical safety, and a good first step is to remove your personal information from data brokers. Here are two reputable paid services for folks who are worried about potentially being doxxed. If you can’t afford a paid service, you can do some of this work manually (see the guides below).

GUIDES:

  1. Games Hotline Digital Safety Guide is a fairly comprehensive guide covering a number of online safety topics and suggestions.
  2. Online SOS empowers people facing online harassment with action plans, guides, and checklists.

DIRECT SUPPORT (USA based):

  1. The Games and Online Harassment Hotline: is a free, text message-based, confidential emotional support hotline. Text 23368 from anywhere in the USA to get started.
  2. Cyber Civil Rights Initiative Helpline: If you are a victim of nonconsensual pornography, recorded sexual assault, or sextortion and you reside in the United States, please call the CCRI Crisis Helpline at 844–878-CCRI (2274).
